CALL TO ART: SF Creative Corps
Paint the Void is receiving a grant from the City of San Francisco to pay local visual artists
to promote COVID-19 public health messaging through public art.
to promote COVID-19 public health messaging through public art.
Paint the Void (PtV), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) and the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development are launching the “SF Creative Corps”, a pilot program that will engage visual and performance artists in the effort to educate the public around COVID safe practices.
Bay Area visual artists are invited to submit their work by filling out this short form.
Artists that live in or have strong ties with neighborhoods that are most affected by COVID-19 will be prioritized. Every community has its own ways of relating to the pandemic and the appropriate delivery of public safety practices will be best understood by creatives who understand the local culture. PtV will shortlist a set of artists that qualify geographically and invite them to submit a loose sketch or concept for a mural on the theme. The artists with selected proposals will be contacted and matched with a storefront to develop the concept and create the mural. All visual artists are encouraged to apply as COVID-19 rates of infection may shift to different areas of the City and the map of prioritized neighborhoods may evolve.
PtV will administer the visual art component and match artists with boarded up businesses to create 30 temporary murals between November 2020 and March 2021. The objective is to highlight behaviors that protect your community: wearing masks, not gathering in large numbers, staying indoors as well as messaging around how to stay safe while shopping and dining.
The performance art component of the SF Creative Corp will be administered by the YBCA and will pay 30 local performance artists – including actors, musicians, dancers, and other performers – to serve as Community Health Ambassadors (CHAs) to creatively encourage COVID safe practices in public spaces such as busy streets with outdoor restaurants; parks; and other high foot traffic areas. For more information, visit www.ybca.org
For more information on the SF Creative Corps see full announcement from the Office of the Mayor, London Breed.
The SF Creative Corps is an opportunity not only to bring beauty and joy to public spaces but also to support artists during an economically challenging time while educating communities with critical public health messaging. Art has the power to ignite public imagination towards a deeper understanding of how the virus spreads and how our actions can protect our families, friends and neighbors. Let’s continue painting San Francisco with hope, beauty, resilience as well as care for our family, friends and neighbors.
Paint The Void is seeking volunteers to assist in our efforts. If you are interested in getting involved please fill out this volunteer form. Thank you in advance!
